HONDA’S 4-STROKE OUTBOARD: CLEANER, QUIETER AND MORE ECONOMICAL

Right from the very outset, Honda has believed in protecting the environment for future generations. Our sustainable intentions are the reason for our deliberate choice only to produce 4-stroke outboard motors that are clean, quiet and economical. Discover the many benefits of this type of outboard motor here.

Honda: an environmentally aware company from the outset

Here at Honda, we want to do more than just make the best products. We always aim to be environmentally aware in our business practices as well. This vision goes right back to our founder, Soichiro Honda, who said: “Because the water raises rice, and fishes live in the water, I don’t want to contaminate it.” This concern for protecting the environment for future generations explains why we only produce 4-stroke outboard motors.

4-stroke outboard motors produce up to 90% lower emissions

4-stroke engines are more environmentally friendly than 2-stroke ones because they have far lower emissions. 2-stroke motors burn a mixture of oil and petrol, which means the exhaust fumes include burned oil vapour that is released into the air. Conversely, 4-stroke motors only use petrol, so they do not emit pollution in the form of raw fuel. This difference in emissions can be as much as 90% lower for a 4-stroke outboard motor.

2-stroke motors are sometimes banned

2-stroke motors are banned from some waterways and ecologically vulnerable areas, and all motorboats used there must have EPA-approved 4-stroke outboard engines. This has led to some manufacturers ceasing production of 2-stroke outboard engines entirely. For Honda, this is a clear confirmation that our decision to opt for 4-stroke outboard motors was the right one.

4-stroke outboard motors are up to 50% more economical

The fuel efficiency of a 4-stroke outboard motor can be around 50% better than the efficiency of a 2-stroke motor of the same capacity. So you consume less petrol, and you can travel further on a full tank. This benefit is most obvious if you travel long distances, for example for fishing. It is also the reason most seafaring captains exclusively use 4-stroke motors for their offshore trips.

50% quieter and lower vibrations

A 4-stroke outboard engine makes considerably less noise and vibrates less. You feel this most if you are using the throttle, and it makes a big difference if you are fishing or if you want to have a relaxing day on the water.

All the benefits of a 4-stroke outboard motor

  • More environmentally friendly
  • Uses less fuel
  • Works on pure petrol, so you don’t have to mix it with oil
  • Quieter
  • Vibrates less

Honda: pioneering outboard motors

Since the introduction of our first outboard motor in 1964, Honda has grown into one of the biggest players on the outboard market. More than half a century of innovating, testing and refining has turned our maritime technology into a global leader. Since open water is one of the harshest environments on earth, our technologies and innovations are tested extensively, according to the highest standards. We are constantly pushing back the boundaries of what is possible to give you even more: more performance, more savings on your fuel consumption and more control.
