Understanding nylon line labels
Before diving into the selection process, it's essential to understand how to read the label on the nylon line packaging, because not all nylon wires will be right for your needs. Luckily decoding these labels is simpler than you might think.
Safety tip
Always make sure you’re wearing the right protective equipment when working with brush cutters/trimmers. That means:
- long trousers
- sturdy boots and gloves
- eye and ear protection
Honda's range of nylon lines
Honda offers three types of nylon wire. Each one is tailored to different needs, so there's a nylon trimmer wire to fit every requirement. Let's explore these three types of nylon trimmer string, and their unique features:
1. Round wire line for everyday use
For those seeking a cost-effective option without compromising on durability, Honda round wire line is the answer. This monofilament line is manufactured from highly durable polymer resin which offers superior cutting power, wear resistance and flexibility. Unlike cheap alternatives, Honda trimmer strings also boast impressive weld resistance, which means they won’t melt or fuse to other surfaces when hot or under friction.
- Ideal for year-round grass trimming
- Cost-effective but durable
- Excellent cutting efficiency
2. High-strength angular wire line
When tackling tougher jobs that demand extra cutting power, Honda's WX monofilament line is a great choice. Made of the same flexible, wear- and weld- resistant polymer resin as the round monofilament, this line is even stronger thanks to its unique star shape. This line has 10 outside edges and 5 inside edges. Once the outer edges wear down, the inner edges take over, for continuous cutting and a longer-lasting line.
- For tougher brush-cutting jobs
- Unique angular line structure for strength
- 10 outer and 5 inner edges for lasting cutting power
3. Silent twisted wire line
Concerned about noise levels and environmental impact? Honda's twisted wire monofilament is the line for you. Not only does it produce less noise and vibration, but its spiral shape also enhances both cutting ability and engine efficiency. The spiral line slices through air with less resistance, which means a faster spin, better cutting and lower fuel/battery use. All these features make this line a great choice for ecologically conscious gardeners. The silent twisted line is still made from the same high-grade resin polymer as our other quality trimmer strings.
- Low noise & low vibration for a more pleasant experience
- Decreases fuel use/increases battery life: our most eco-friendly line
- Fast and efficient cutting
Choosing the right diameter
Choosing the correct diameter nylon line for your brush cutter is crucial for optimal performance and safety. Each brush cutter or lawn trimmer will have recommended diameters or a range of diameters, so consult your own manual or speak to your dealer to find out the best line for you. In general, lighter lines are quieter and more fuel efficient, ideal for trimming short grass. Thicker lines are stronger and more powerful. These are used with more powerful brush cutters to tackle tough vegetation.
Did you know?
The colour of nylon line indicates the diameter of the line, not the length.
Using the right diameter nylon line will enhance the lifespan of your machine and reduce the risk of flying debris, kickback or entanglement, helping you stay safe while operating the machine. It's easy to identify the diameter of your Honda Genuine nylon trimmer wire – and remember which wire you need next time – because the lines are colour coded by diameter.
- Blue: 1.6mm diameter
- Green: 2.0mm diameter
- Orange: 2.4mm diameter
- Red: 2.7mm diameter
- Yellow: 3.0mm diameter
- White: 3.3mm diameter
The right line for the job
Trimming short grass/clover etc.: 1.6mm/2.0mm/2.4mm
Cutting back long/rough grass: 2.0mm/2.7mm
Slashing thicker weeds or undergrowth: 3.0mm/3.3mm
Please note, nylon trimmer lines are not appropriate for cutting branches > 5cm.
